Skin Care Awareness Month: Why Early Detection and Non-Invasive Treatments Matter

September is Skin Care Awareness Month, which is an important time to reflect on the role skin health plays in overall well-being. Skin is the body’s largest organ, serving as the first line of defense against environmental factors, so protecting it should already be a year-round priority. However, this month provides us all the opportunity to focus on early detection, proactive prevention, and the growing availability of non-invasive treatment options.

Check Your Skin this Skin Care Awareness Month: The Importance of Early Detection

Non-melanoma skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, are among the most common forms of cancer. When detected early, these conditions are highly treatable. Routine skin examinations can help identify suspicious lesions before they progress.   Self-exams and annual dermatologist visits can help you spot:
  • New or changing moles
  • Persistent sores that don’t heal
  • Rough patches, bumps, or scaly areas
Early detection can improve your treatment outcomes and can also allow for the use of less invasive treatments. Here at Sensus Healthcare, we encourage all our patients to schedule regular dermatology appointments, especially if they have risk factors such as fair skin, prolonged sun exposure, or a history of skin cancer.

Skin Cancer Prevention

Preventive care is the most effective way to reduce the risk of skin cancer. Some key recommendations to take away from Skin Care Awareness Month are:
  • Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily
  • Wear protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses when outdoors
  • Seek shade during peak sun hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
  • Avoid tanning beds
These simple measures can significantly lower the likelihood of developing skin cancer over time.

Non-Invasive Treatment Options: The Role of SRT

Historically, surgical excision has been the most common treatment for non-melanoma skin cancers. However, surgery may not be the most appropriate option for every patient, especially for older adults, those with other health concerns, or patients with lesions in cosmetically sensitive areas like the face, ears, or scalp.   Sensus Healthcare offers a proven alternative: Superficial Radiotherapy (SRT). This FDA-cleared technology delivers precise, low-dose radiation directly to the affected skin, targeting cancer cells while preserving surrounding healthy tissue. As an alternative to MOHs surgery, SRT is non-invasive, painless, and requires no cutting or stitches, making it an ideal choice for many patients. In addition, SRT provides excellent cosmetic outcomes, minimizing scarring and maintaining the skin’s appearance.   At Sensus Healthcare, our newest technology, the SRT-100 and SRT-100+, make us the worldwide leader in non-invasive and pain free treatments for skin cancer.

Commitment to Patient-Centered Innovation

Sensus Healthcare is dedicated to treating skin cancer with solutions that are both effective and patient-friendly.
